It is strange how people lower their standards for ytbers using the same equipment and in some cases better equipment than indie filmmakers.

I figured it was cheaper for me to buy 2x8gb and stick those in than buy an "upgraded" version with 2x8gb. So if I could keep using those 4gb ones, I could get more out of the system, as long as I pair them correctly, right?

So basically it's relatively safe to upgrade RAM in pairs then, as long as you pay attention and use the appropriate channels? Obviously the ideal scenario would obviously be to keep all four sticks the same (for looks too) but it did seem like the slots were divided into pairs for a reason...

  • Bryon M

Laptops are doing one stick of soldered a lot. So for example 8 soldered and 8 in slot for a total of 16. If I wanted to upgrade would I swap the slotted for a 16 for a max of 24. Would that mean that now only 8 is dual channel. Or 16 is still dual channel but the remainder of needed will be single. Has anyone had any luck reflowing a soldered module off the board and adding a slot to allow for more?

Since ages ago it all boils down to if your memory access times can be synced between all of your memory chips. Be it that old 80s homecomputer that you gave 512 kByte of 140 ns DRAM, yes the Amiga is _that_ old, or your modern system with that fancy 32 GByte DDR-whatever running at 3600 MHz.

Can't believe I am seeing video about mixing RAM modules, speeds and capacities from reputable channel without mentioning a word how they tester for stability in all of the scenarios. The fact that you did not encounter system crash during testing doens't mean your system is stable and doent generate single bit/byte errors that will affect your data/OS at some point negatively..

I think there's other kinds of memory incompatibilities too. When I built my system, I bought 4x 8GB sticks in the 3200 or 3300 range with a latency of 16-16-16-36. The new stick was some 3600 with 19-20-20-40. It which did not seem to want to downshift to match the other 3 memory sticks in my machine and it didn't seem any more stable. Note that my needed flavor of memory is getting hard to come by.

Capacity makes a huge difference when pushing systems to their limits. As far as the speed... that's all relative. As long as the RAM modules are within .25 nanoseconds on the real latency chart they should play nice without causing too much strain on the memcontroller.

Ah, this reminds me of the days of slapping whatever RAM you could get your hands on into an old tower. We had 4 different makes with different speeds and capacities. I was so happy to get that last stick in there to reach a whopping 256MB memory. Never had an issue with boot back then. Of course, the old saying was the slowest RAM clocked the rest, so compatibility wasn't an issue. And in case you were wondering: 48, 128, 64, 32 was the sizes. I'd scavenge tossed PCs to find a coveted 128 MB, then 256, then the holy grail of 512 MB before the computer just couldn't accept them anymore. Man, those days were so fun... Now I just buy whatever parts can make a computer to run 8 years, toss the whole build, and design another. No thrill in slow upgrades anymore because there's no point. By the time my computer could do with another set of RAM, software has gotten too bloated to make it worth keeping.

so im in this weird situation, i got one stick of a viper patriot silver 8gb 3200mhz for (X) amount of dollars, then because i live in a shitty third world country, those stick are unaviable , anywhere, and all rams doubled, even tripled it price tags and so on....so i managed to find a sweet deal of the very same stick(same specs) with the difference of this having RGB . Will this creates problems on the fact that one of my sticks uses rgb and the other doesnt?, like, does they still counts as the "same" stick? sorry for the newbie question

I have a 8gb ddr4 in my laptop and the specs say I can upgrade it to 20gb using a single sodimm module. But I can't find any 12gb modules on Amazon. Any suggestions?
