Back in 2019 we challenged ourselves to build an all-flash version of Lumaforge's Jellyfish hard drive-based video editing server for the SAME price. We succeed, but we've always wondered, what if we went for feature and hardware parity, how much could be saved? The answer might shock you.

That write cache is WAAAAY too big. You only need something like 5x or 10x the maximum amount of data you can write in a second. After that txg_sync will flush the cache to disk. Also you should have a mirrored write cache in case of failure, you will corrupt / lose data if that happens.

Does the server have a built-in switch so you don't need a crossover cable anymore? Are those even still a thing?

Like I get the convenience of having it ship ready to go, goodness knows I haven't the foggiest how to set up something like TrueNAS, nor pick all the right parts to build this thing. That said, with $45K left over I could hire someone to do that all for me and have tonnes of cash left over. The price difference is just insane.

Probably don't want a non mirrored SLOG, as you could potentially take down your entire pool if that SSD fails. Also, for non sync workloads - it won't provide any benefit anyway.

  • Kyle Vine

You should just bridge the NICs and connect it to your local network. The local DHCP would takeover and assign IP addresses for you, in addition to supplying internet over the same cable. This seems way easier for people who aren't familiar with subnets and stuff (Jellyfish users).

  • Kyle Vine

    Kyle Vine

    5 วันที่ผ่านมา

I just tried this and you need to set the IP of the bridge (the server) manually. You should probably do this anyway so the IP address doesn't change. I can confirm DHCP and internet pass through fine to the clients over the bridge.

Great idea - and hats off! I also had to think about expanding and improving my network storage 2 months ago: got a HP Proliant DL 380 Gen 9 LFF rack server with 2x Xeon, 32 GB memory, 2x PSU, 4x GBIT NIC and 2x 40GBit hp infinitiloop NIC for 200 Euro used + rail kit (50 euro) Then added another 32GB memory (100 euro), another 2x 10GBit NIC (60 euro), a HP P440 raid controller (60euro) the 12x LFF backplane with connectors (pricy - 300 euro) and 4x 3TB SAS HP drives (240 Euro) + some old SATA drives That have been sitting around. From here is it personal preference and the remaining infrastructure: I run windows 2016 hyper-v core (free) on which I installed a centos VM ( for trial and testing) as well as a windows server 2016 VM for media and video files / and also moved an existing windows 2012 VM (sql server onto it) So shy of 1000 euro I got a decent HP hyper-v host with 2x 8 cores + HT, 12x 3,5 slots, SAS and SATA compatibility, as well as 2x 40GBit, 2x 10 GBIT and 4x 1 GBIT connectivity. Maxed out it would be 1,5 TB ram, (12 + 3 backplane) x 18(?) TB hdd while the OS could be installed on HPE micro SD or raid1 usb stick

There will always be people that buy expensive prebuilts than building a cheaper custom one with the same specs. They justify it because they can have it serviced. Its not always a good solution. The best solution is to have your techy friend(linus) build it for cheap and have it serviced by them (linus) and you only need to pay them food and drink when they come and fix it when it's having issues. :D or u can always guilt trip them and they fix it for free anyways. Lol.

Instead of using static ip’s they could set up a dhcp server for those ports and have it hand out IP’s the same way a router does. That would get it closer to plug and play.

  • ruediix
    ruediix2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Many of those USB plug adapters will work in Linux. Additionally, you don't need a special tool if they will run. They just use the internal OS hardware monitoring software instead. Much better, if you ask me.

It is funny how many people think SLOG is for added performance boost. In reality it is intended to provide safety. Thusly Super-cap backed SSD's are recommended. In fact, get a hold of a few RMS-200/8G PCI-e cards with 8GB of DDR3 (You reviewed a similar Gigabyte card from the 00's, and THAT is what those could be used for... Those RMS-200 beasts do 5.5GB/sec unlimited write endurance and 1.4Mil IOPS. SLOG is all about latency. Those Sabrent will not last long before they fail catastrophically with the amount of data I suspect you intend to push through them. You will probably also fry those L2ARC SSD's plenty fast.

your math is correct but the manufacturers are a bit misleading as always. the number is about the data in the disk platters ONLY, not the disk heads, circuits etc and if the platters are not damaged. most common (spinning) disk failures are caused by r/w heads fault (stuck), heads crashing to the platters, or circuit board fail. your data in the platters can theoretically be fine for 285 years IF you have a way to replace any of the other failed components, you can read them. in reality, for continuous operation, i'd say ~5years for most consumer disks and maybe even ~10 for some good enterprise models. but after that, they are basically zombies.
